Train now on how to answer the OASIS wound items based on the new NPUAP pressure ulcer staging definitions so you’ll be ready for OASIS-C2.
In case you haven’t heard, the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) recently released noteworthy changes to wound definitions and stages, effective immediately. Among the changes, the term “pressure injury” will replace “pressure ulcer,” a clarification that pressure ulcers with slough or eschar are at least a Stage 3; and additional pressure ulcer definitions related to Medical Device Related Pressure Injury and Muscosal Membrane Pressure Injury.
CMS has not yet adopted these definitions—but experts believe they will with the implementation of OASIS-C2. Clinicians like yourself need to pay close attention to these definitions to ensure you’re completing the OASIS accurately. Case in point: mistakenly marking a stage 3 ulcer as a stage 2 results in a loss of clinical points and potentially $500 or so per episode. Bottom line—a repeat mistake will cost you.
